Schemata Architects has created a unique design for Blue Bottle Coffee’s new cafe, focusing on integrating the building with the surrounding park. The goal was to ensure that the park feels like an extension of the cafe, while the cafe becomes one of the park’s many diverse spaces.
Founder Jo Nagasaka explained that the design was crafted to preserve the park’s natural qualities. “The entire building was created as a cluster of human-scale volumes to avoid diminishing the park’s appeal,” he said. The cafe was designed as a “gradation of outdoor, semi-outdoor, and indoor activities,” accessible from all sides.
To enhance the connection between the indoors and outdoors, Schemata Architects used bricks both inside and outside the 300-square-meter cafe. This design choice was intended to eliminate the clear boundary between the spaces, creating a seamless transition between indoor, semi-outdoor, and outdoor areas.
