Hilltop Coffee, a boutique coffee shop designed with students in mind, is set to open in Mallard Creek on Monday, March 3.
Why it matters: With limited locally-owned coffee options in the University City area, Hilltop’s owners aim to meet the demand for a welcoming spot for both students and neighbors.
“Sometimes we have to drive so far to get nice things, so I think access is big to me,” said co-owner Joy Shiver. “I want to provide that, especially for the university crowd.”
Flashback: The name “Hilltop” honors Howard University’s school newspaper, where co-owners Joy Shiver and Rashad Hart first met. Although their initial plan to open a shop at their alma mater fell through, they shifted their focus to launching a brick-and-mortar location near University.
The vibe: The 1,250-square-foot shop features a French bistro-inspired design, with seating for about 20 indoors and additional outdoor seating on the patio.
