Dozens of coffee farmers in St. Andrew East Rural have received vital farming supplies through a donation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA).
The donation, presented on Tuesday, May 20, at Resource Square in Cinchona, included 8,000 bags of fertiliser, 10,000 coffee seedlings, rodenticide, attractant, and cacao seedlings.
These items were provided under the Crop Restoration and Expansion Programme (CREP), which aims to help farmers boost coffee production and improve yields.
The initiative was supported by several agricultural partners, including Hi-Pro, Newport-Fersan (Jamaica) Limited, Caribbean Chemicals Jamaica Limited, and St. Jago Farm and Hardware Store.
Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Floyd Green, addressed farmers at the event. He explained that the supplies are intended to help reduce the cost of production for growers and encourage further development of the coffee sector.
Minister Green also announced that $32 million has been allocated to assist coffee farmers in increasing their yield as part of the government’s broader agricultural support efforts.
