The government has allocated K10 million this year to support coffee prices, a portion of which will be directly distributed to farmers through a new “Green Gold Card.”
The announcement was made by Koroba-Lake Kopiago MP and Minister for Coffee, William Bando, during the reopening of the Anego Coffee Factory at Kabiufa in Goroka District, Eastern Highlands Province, on Friday. The Coffee Industry Corporation Limited (CIC) is overseeing the implementation of the initiative.
“This budget is dedicated to farmers,” Bando said, acknowledging the vital role farmers play in the coffee supply chain. “They are the ones doing the hardest and dirtiest work that allows everyone else along the value chain to succeed,” he added.
Bando explained that the idea for the Green Gold Card came after two weeks of observing the coffee industry in the province. The card will allow farmers to record their personal and bank account details each time they sell their coffee to factories. This system ensures they are paid immediately for their coffee and later receive an additional payment directly into their bank accounts.
