Students at the University of Illinois may soon have a new coffee option right next to campus. On Monday, the Urbana City Council will vote on whether to approve a Special Use Permit allowing Dutch Bros Coffee to add a drive-thru to a new location.
The Zoning Board of Appeals gave its approval for the use of the site as a fast food restaurant on January 15, 2025. However, the Plan Commission, in a vote on January 16, 2025, recommended that the City Council deny the proposed permit.
The Plan Commission’s recommendation for denial is based on concerns about the drive-thru. The committee argues that the plan could negatively affect pedestrian safety, create parking issues for online orders, and worsen traffic flow in the area.
If the Special Use Permit is granted, Dutch Bros would be allowed to operate with the following conditions: the site would have a maximum of 16 automobile parking spaces, 6 bicycle parking spaces, restrooms for customers, and outdoor seating.
If approved, Dutch Bros will be able to apply for the necessary building permits to develop the site. The lease for the location would last 15 years.
