Azal Coffee, the latest addition to Milwaukee’s coffee scene, opened its doors in the Harbor District on Friday, April 18. By Monday, the café had already earned a loyal following, with several repeat customers already making their way back.
“It’s been a lot busier than we expected,” a representative from Azal Coffee shared with Urban Milwaukee. “So far, everybody seems to be happy.”
Located at 1318 S. 1st St., Azal is Milwaukee’s first Yemeni coffee shop. The café serves coffee made with beans sourced from Yemen, one of the world’s oldest and most renowned coffee-growing regions. In addition to coffee, Azal offers a variety of teas, refreshers, and desserts.
Yemeni-style coffee shops, which are becoming increasingly popular across the United States, are known for their distinctive lattes. Azal’s menu includes specialty lattes in flavors such as pistachio, Biscoff, and Nutella, as well as traditional drinks like Turkish coffee, adeni tea, and qishr — a spiced drink made with coffee husks, ginger, and cinnamon.
For those who prefer classic coffee beverages, Azal also serves espresso, cappuccinos, americanos, and cortados. Caffeine-free options include ginger milk, hot or iced chocolate, and a range of refreshing drinks in flavors like hibiscus, mango dragon, and strawberry.
The café’s food menu currently features mini pancakes and waffles, with an array of sweets, including tres leches cake and Dubai cheesecake, available for purchase near the register. Azal plans to expand its food offerings with lunch items in the coming weeks.
