Popular Chinese coffee chain Luckin Coffee is bringing its brews to the U.S., with its first American location set to open in New York City. The café will be located at 755 Broadway at East Eighth Street in the East Village, according to a report by EV Grieve. An official opening date has not yet been announced.
Founded in Beijing in 2017 and now based in Xiamen, Luckin Coffee has quickly become a major player in China’s growing coffee culture. Though China is traditionally known for its tea, coffee has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. Luckin now operates more stores in China than Starbucks and has expanded to Singapore and Malaysia, with more than 24,000 locations in total.
Luckin’s cafes are known for their fully cashier-less model, focusing on pickup, delivery, and dine-in service. The menu features a variety of creative espresso-based drinks, including coconut and Velvet lattes (the latter made with thick Hokkaido milk), the Little Butter latte (made with French butter), and Americanos blended with juices like orange and fizzy apple.
The upcoming New York location will take over the space previously occupied by a Sunglass Hut. According to its LinkedIn page, Luckin Coffee appears to be setting up its U.S. headquarters in Secaucus, New Jersey, where it is currently hiring for several positions.
