Deliveroo has teamed up with artisan bakery chain Gail’s and Sheffield Hallam University to launch a student-led innovation challenge aimed at designing a sustainable coffee cup for delivery. The initiative is part of Deliveroo’s Sustainable Packaging Challenge, reflecting the company’s commitment to improving packaging across its platform.
Students have been tasked with creating a cup prototype that keeps hot drinks warm, prevents spills, and ensures beverages arrive in top condition—all while prioritizing sustainability. Over the next five months, participants will receive expert guidance from Deliveroo and Gail’s, culminating in a final showcase where the winning design will be chosen.
The winning team will receive a £1,500 cash prize and the opportunity to explore the commercial potential of their design with Gail’s.
Deliveroo noted that breakfast and coffee are among the fastest-growing categories on its platform, driving the need for packaging that is ethically sourced, recyclable, compostable, or made from renewable materials.
Gail’s, one of Deliveroo’s most popular coffee and breakfast partners, began working with the platform via 19 London locations and has since expanded to over 160 bakeries across 13 UK cities, including Manchester, Birmingham, Oxford, Cambridge, Brighton, and Bristol.
