In 2025, the global coffee industry is taking major steps to make its supply chains more sustainable. This shift responds to growing environmental concerns and changing consumer demands. Companies are focusing on everything from farming techniques to packaging materials to reduce their overall environmental impact.
Aluminium, widely used in coffee packaging, is at the center of these conversations. Although it helps preserve coffee and makes packaging durable, aluminium has a heavy environmental cost. Industry leaders are now exploring alternative materials and improved recycling methods to lessen that impact.
Large companies such as Nestlé are supporting regenerative farming practices to make coffee production more sustainable. Nestlé aims to buy 100% responsibly grown coffee by the end of 2025, with a major share coming from farms that use regenerative methods. These practices help restore soil health and boost biodiversity.
To support better farming standards, the Rainforest Alliance and Nespresso introduced the Regenerative Coffee Scorecard. This new tool helps coffee companies measure and improve their environmental efforts, encouraging ongoing progress toward greener operations.
Swiss retailer Migros has also taken a bold step by launching the CoffeeB system. This innovative product eliminates the need for traditional aluminium and plastic coffee capsules. The capsule-free system reduces waste and makes recycling easier, offering a more eco-friendly option for coffee drinkers.
Governments are getting involved, too. In the UK, new laws now ban products linked to illegal deforestation, including coffee. These rules force companies to check their supply chains and prove they are sourcing coffee responsibly.
Meanwhile, the Global Coffee Platform (GCP) has updated its Coffee Sustainability Reference Code. The revised code sets out clear guidelines for sustainable coffee production, covering economic, social, and environmental standards. It encourages coffee producers and companies around the world to follow best practices and work together toward a more sustainable future.
