President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to visit the multi-billion shilling African Coffee Park under construction in Rwashamaire Town Council, Ntungamo District, on May 23, 2025, to assess its progress ahead of the much-anticipated Coffee Marathon.
The industrial park, which is being developed with funding from the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Secretariat under the Office of the President, is a landmark project in Uganda’s coffee sector. In the 2023/2024 Financial Year, the government allocated resources to establish this state-of-the-art facility with a vision to transform Uganda’s coffee value chain.
Upon completion, the park will produce a variety of high-value products, including:
- Instant coffee
- Drip coffee
- Malt coffee
- Coffee energy drinks
- Coffee-based beauty cosmetics
The long-term goal is to increase Uganda’s coffee export revenue from the current USD 1 billion to USD 4 billion, positioning the country as a global coffee powerhouse.
President Museveni will deliver a keynote address to coffee farmers and stakeholders during his visit, further affirming the government’s commitment to agro-industrialization and value addition as strategic pillars of Uganda’s economic growth. His tour of the facility will spotlight progress and energize national focus on sustainable coffee production.
The African Coffee Park has also become a center for agri-tourism, offering immersive experiences that showcase Uganda’s bean-to-cup coffee journey. The park is seen as a model for empowering local farmers and promoting best practices in sustainable agriculture.
Coffee Marathon: Blending Fitness, Culture, and Empowerment
Coinciding with the President’s visit is the Coffee Marathon, a unique event that celebrates Uganda’s coffee culture through a combination of sport, education, and industry networking.
During a press briefing on Friday at the African Coffee Park, Dan Kaguta, representing Dr. Tugume Nelson, CEO of Inspire Africa Coffee Group, unveiled the marathon’s exciting program. The lineup includes:
- Competitive races
- Coffee exhibitions
- Guided plantation tours
- Coffee-tasting sessions
- Networking forums with industry stakeholders
Proceeds from the marathon will go toward supporting women in the coffee sector to form SACCOs (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations). This initiative aligns with the four pillars of the NRM, aiming to lift Ugandans out of poverty by integrating more citizens into the money economy.
“This is not just about coffee—it’s about transformation,” Kaguta said. “Empowering women in coffee is key to driving inclusive growth in our economy.”
As Uganda continues to embrace innovation and value addition in agriculture, the African Coffee Park and Coffee Marathon stand as powerful symbols of what is possible through visionary leadership, community empowerment, and a shared passion for coffee.
