Ethiopia has achieved a historic milestone in its coffee sector by generating USD 1.8 billion from exports in the past ten months, significantly surpassing its original target and establishing a new national record, according to the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA).
From July to April, Ethiopia exported 354,392 tonnes of coffee, exceeding initial targets of 240,753 tonnes and USD 1.315 billion by an impressive 147%, marking the highest export performance in the country’s history.
Leading markets for Ethiopian coffee included Germany, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. Germany topped the list with over 61,000 tonnes imported, generating USD 295 million in revenue, followed closely by Saudi Arabia with USD 290 million and the U.S. with USD 192 million.
ECTA’s Communication Director, Sahelmariam Gebremedhin, attributed this success to Ethiopia’s globally recognized coffee quality, enhanced market access, and strategic promotional efforts. Compared to the previous year, export volumes grew by 145,000 tonnes and revenues increased by USD 869 million.
Additional key buyers such as Belgium, China, South Korea, the UAE, Japan, Italy, and Jordan contributed to 78% of total export revenue. Officials remain optimistic that Ethiopia’s strong performance will further boost its standing as a top global coffee exporter by the end of the year.
