Montreal’s cherished Melk Café has made a striking new entrance inside the bustling Eaton Centre with its latest concept, Café le 9e. This fresh spot embodies the beloved Melk spirit while adding a sophisticated twist inspired by its namesake, le 9e.
The project is the brainchild of an experienced, passionate team: Gabrielle Deschamps (Director of Operations), Soazig Mahé (Manager), co-owners Myriam Asselin and Dominique Jacques, alongside acclaimed chefs Derek Dammann and Liam Hopkins. Together, they’ve crafted a refined café experience that delivers Melk’s hallmark quality with a focus on speed and accessibility.
Chef Derek Dammann (known for McKiernan and Maison Publique) and Liam Hopkins (Hopkins, McKiernan, Park) have curated a simple yet elegant menu tailored to the smaller, efficient space. Highlights include the jambon-beurre on custom Hof Kelsten bread and the café’s signature croissant-baguette take on the classic sandwich — both light, fresh, and delightful.
Designed by Alex Baldwin, Café le 9e offers a visually stunning atmosphere that transports guests away from the Eaton Centre’s hustle. The space blends vintage charm and modern design, featuring a stainless-steel canopy, 1930s marble columns, and hand-painted walls that pay homage to the building’s rich history. The reimagined lobby invites visitors into a serene oasis—an ideal refuge amid the shopping frenzy.
Dominique Jacques sums it up best: “It’s not just the same owners—it is a Melk. We wanted to keep that essence while adapting it to this space.” With 90% of the food prepared by their exclusive supplier Abierto, freshness and quality remain uncompromised.
Café le 9e represents Melk’s bold new chapter—expanding its reach while maintaining the excellence that Montreal coffee lovers adore.
