Bitty & Beau’s Coffee will officially open its first Columbus location on Friday, May 3, at 3110 Kingsdale Center.
Founded by Amy and Ben Wright, the coffee chain is known for its mission to create job opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The couple were inspired by their children—Lillie, who has autism, and Bitty and Beau, who have Down syndrome. According to the company’s website, more than 80% of people with intellectual disabilities are unemployed in the U.S., a statistic the Wrights aim to change.
The first Bitty & Beau’s Coffee opened in Wilmington, North Carolina, in 2016 and employed 19 people with disabilities. Since then, the brand has grown to include 18 locations in 11 states, with over 450 employees.
The Columbus opening was announced on April 18 via the company’s Facebook page. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. on opening day, and visitors will have the chance to meet the local staff.
