The Brazil Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA) and the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) have entered into a strategic partnership, adopting the Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) as the official protocol for evaluating Brazilian specialty coffees. This new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) strengthens Brazil’s leadership in the specialty coffee industry and establishes a national standard for quality assessment.
Brazil is the world’s largest coffee producer and the second-largest consumer. Its various growing regions offer a wide array of microclimates, leading to a diverse range of coffee profiles. This partnership follows a similar agreement with the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia, making Brazil the second country to integrate the CVA into its official coffee evaluation system. The move highlights a global trend toward a more holistic and equitable approach to assessing coffee quality.
Beyond the adoption of CVA, the agreement emphasizes education and professional development. BSCA will spearhead the expansion of SCA Education in Brazil, working with SCA to provide internationally recognized training and certification. The aim is to make high-quality education accessible to coffee professionals across Brazil, from producers and cuppers to roasters and quality managers. This will help build the skills needed for success in the global coffee market.
Vinicius Estrela, executive director of BSCA, said, “This MoU demonstrates our commitment to strengthening Brazil’s leadership in specialty coffee. By adopting the CVA and partnering with the SCA to expand training, we are creating new opportunities for producers and promoting a more inclusive and transparent future for coffee.”
