Ethiopia’s Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) announced a landmark $1.868 billion in coffee export revenue over the past 10 months—a remarkable 87% increase from last year. With 354,302 tonnes sold, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and the United States are the top importers of Ethiopian coffee.
ECTA’s director-general, Adugna Debela, called this growth an “outstanding achievement” resulting from a coordinated national effort. Optimism remains high for continued strong performance through the fiscal year’s end.
Coffee remains the backbone of Ethiopia’s agriculture-driven economy and is the country’s leading export. Ethiopian coffee, predominantly Arabica, is globally renowned for its smooth, mild taste with fruity and nutty notes—a heritage rooted in Ethiopia’s unique heirloom varieties, high-altitude growing regions, and traditional shaded farming methods.
Last year, researchers confirmed that Arabica coffee originated in Ethiopia’s southwestern highlands, further cementing the nation’s status as coffee’s ancestral home.
