Starbucks has named its first-ever global barista champion. The title was awarded Wednesday during a major competition in Las Vegas that tested baristas on coffee skills, product knowledge, and their ability to connect with customers.
The three-day contest featured 12 top baristas from across the world, chosen from a pool of more than 84,000 Starbucks employees. The final round took place in front of more than 14,000 store managers and staff during the company’s Leadership Experience event.
The winner, known only as Nobuki from Japan, now has the opportunity to create a new drink that will be featured in Starbucks stores across the United States. Starbucks did not release full names of the finalists for privacy reasons.
Contestants were evaluated on their latte art, presentation of a custom drink, and storytelling skills that reflected the Starbucks customer experience.
Nobuki impressed the judges with both skill and charm. “The first step is a sparkling smile,” he said while making a latte. “Yes, I’m serious. When we smile, everything tastes so much better.”
For his latte art, Nobuki created a rosetta followed by a tulip design. His signature drink was the Blooming Yuzu Espresso, made with a Japanese citrus sauce.
The global competition highlights Starbucks’ commitment to celebrating barista talent and elevating coffee craftsmanship across its worldwide network.
