A new coffee shop, Almadorada, officially opened on June 11 in downtown Bend. Melissa Cavaccang and Liliana—who prefers to use only her first name—launched the café in the space formerly occupied by Turtle Island Coffee, which closed in March.
“We wanted to carry on the welcoming spirit that Turtle Island created,” Cavaccang said. “This is a place where people can be their true selves without judgment. When customers walk in, we want them to feel like they are entering someone’s home.”
Almadorada is owned by members of the QTBIPOC community and features coffee from Smith Rock Coffee Roasters. The menu draws inspiration from Mexican and Indigenous cultures. One specialty drink is Caffe de Olla, a traditional Mexican spiced coffee with cinnamon.
The food menu, called Abuelita’s Kitchen as a tribute to the owners’ grandmothers, includes Breakfast Tortas with a variety of fillings like veggies and chicken, breakfast-style Empanadas, mushroom al pastor, and cheese and beans, plus Pan Dulce sourced from La Frontera in Redmond. A full menu with different styles of Chilaquiles will be added soon.
The name Almadorada means “golden soul” or “beloved soul,” honoring the important women in the owners’ lives.
