Caribou Coffee, a leading premium coffeehouse chain in the U.S., has taken a major step in its 2025 expansion by opening its first stand-alone coffeehouse and drive-thru in Texas. The new location at 5955 Rufe Snow Drive, Watauga, marks the company’s commitment to growth while prioritizing sustainable building practices.
This Watauga store is uniquely designed through the adaptive reuse of an existing quick-service restaurant (QSR) property. Emily Heuring, senior director of real estate, design, and construction at Caribou Coffee, highlighted the company’s approach:
“We always consider two key factors when opening a new location. First, we want to serve the community with great coffee and a welcoming gathering space. Second, we aim to minimize environmental and community impact during the design and build phase. Here, we chose to retrofit an existing building instead of constructing anew, which reduces waste and resource use significantly.”
Situated at the busy intersection of Rufe Snow Drive and Stardust Drive, the coffeehouse benefits from heavy foot and vehicle traffic in a retail area filled with restaurants, grocery stores, and medical offices. The design optimizes both walk-up customers and drive-thru service. Additionally, a new outdoor patio was added to meet guest preferences and offer more seating options.
Caribou Coffee also follows strict procedures across all locations to reduce food waste and lower water and energy consumption, reinforcing its sustainability commitment.
This Watauga opening is a key milestone in Caribou’s nationwide expansion plans, combining community focus with eco-friendly innovation.
