In a significant move aimed at benefiting Kenyan coffee farmers, Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mutahi Kagwe announced that the country’s coffee auctions will now be fully open to international markets. This reform is set to ensure that farmers receive fairer payouts aligned with global coffee prices.
Speaking in Nyeri County, Kagwe explained that the decision follows inter-ministerial discussions, particularly with Cooperatives CS Wycliffe Oparanya, and is a step toward removing restrictions that previously limited competition. By opening the market to global buyers, the government aims to enhance the coffee value chain, ensuring that farmers can reap the full rewards of their labor.
Thanks to digital infrastructure developed during Kagwe’s time as ICT Minister, international buyers will now be able to participate in Kenya’s coffee auctions and make immediate payments, offering more competitive pricing and greater transparency. “Coffee auctions can no longer be the preserve of a few individuals. They must now be open to the entire international market,” Kagwe said, emphasizing the importance of fair pricing for the country’s coffee sector.
This reform is expected to give a major boost to Kenya’s coffee sub-sector, which is experiencing renewed growth and attention on the global stage.
