Birmingham’s coffee scene just got a fresh jolt with the grand opening of Whammy Coffee’s first brick-and-mortar location, nestled in the Denham Building’s former East Pole Coffee space.
Co-founders Mitch and Maddie McEver have reimagined the shop with cream and maroon walls, added cozy seating, and preserved the space’s elegant walnut and brass details, including a striking 12-stool horseshoe bar under floating Art Deco shelves. Natural light floods in through rows of large windows, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Beyond branding and behind-the-bar duties, Maddie leads the in-house bakery, turning out savory and sweet scones and pastries. And true to Whammy’s playful spirit, every bag of beans still comes with a mini dinosaur toy — a tradition that started when the company began as a creative holiday project between Mitch and a college friend.
This marks an exciting new chapter for the Birmingham coffee scene — one that blends fun, flavor, and a family-inspired foundation.
