Starbucks is set to open a groundbreaking new store this Friday in Brownsville, Texas, near the U.S.-Mexico border. This location is unlike any other, as much of its structure was built using a computer-controlled robotic arm that layered concrete through 3D printing.
The drive-thru-only café makes Starbucks one of the few major retailers experimenting with 3D printing technology for commercial construction. While 3D printing has mostly been used in residential projects—often aimed at addressing affordable housing shortages—this marks an innovative step in retail building.
Starbucks has not revealed if more 3D-printed stores will follow or why Brownsville, a city with about 190,000 residents and several existing Starbucks locations, was chosen for this pilot.
