A coffee chain known for its bold name and Hawaiian roots is set to open its first location in Boerne this fall.
Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii will bring its signature Kona coffee and tropical-inspired drinks to 34590 IH-10 West, according to state filings. The opening marks the chain’s continued expansion into the San Antonio area.
The company’s origin traces back to a Big Island vacation, where founder B.J. Bilanzich discovered a love for Hawaiian-grown coffee. She later brought the brand to Utah, eventually buying the name and launching a nationwide franchise.
Today, Bad Ass Coffee sells single-source beans across the U.S. and operates several brick-and-mortar shops. These stores offer a wide range of espresso drinks, teas, smoothies, and specialty coolers with island flavors. Popular menu items include the “Three Waves” latte—flavored with coconut, caramel, and macadamia—and the “Reef Racer,” an energy drink made with watermelon and dragon fruit.
The food menu features malasadas—Portuguese donuts coated in cinnamon sugar—and a variety of breakfast and lunch sandwiches, along with baked goods. Despite the Hawaiian theme, Spam is notably absent from the offerings.
In 2023, the company announced a five-store franchise deal to expand into North San Antonio. While it’s unclear if the Boerne store is part of that agreement, the original announcement did not list specific locations or name the franchisee.
